Girls club end year trip to Port Elizabeth.

The girls had an excursion to Port Elizabeth. The planning for the trip was very chellenging as the girls tried so hard to raise funds so that they can be able to have this trip. Indeed their hard work paid off and they were able to visit Port Elizabeth and visited very nice placed including the beach. The club is being led by The Sifunda Kunye facilitator and Intermediate Maths teach Mrs Gxamza.

Such opportunity are very rare and the learners are very fortunate to be able to hold bake sales and sell to their fellow learners and sell ruffles so that they can be able to attend the trip.

The girls are really buzzing around busy producing results. We hope for a better year in 2020.

Writing club

As I have promised in my previous article on the article I wrote on the September issue that I will be gathering other learners who are interested in taking this journey with me and form a new writing club, I actually fulfilled my promise and did just that. With the help of Miss Swayi we have been having weekly sessions with the other learners to show that we are really serious about this club. On our weekly sessions we write poems and share them amongst each other, that way we are learning from each other and we are also trying to teach other confidence. In the club, we allow anyone who enjoys writing poems and short stories to join.

Our dream for the club is to see it grow as most of the learners are involved in things that they are not supposed to, we want to be able to make a difference and for the community to be part of our club. We are hoping that one day we will grow to a point where some of our work is recognized and published.

We are thankful to Sifunda Kunye for allowing us to visit the annual Writing Camps, they help a lot.

Sifunda Kunye Community Reading club – Santa Clause visit and Facilitators end year function.

9 November 2019

It was a very exciting day for all our little readers as Santa Clause made a special visit for all our hard working young little readers.

The Sifunda Kunye community reading club assists young readers on Saturdays to improve their reading skills and to create a safe, friendly, fun learning environment.

The club focuses to introduce reading in a fun way, through song, dance, group and individual reading sessions.

The club is run by Sifunda Kunye Lab Facilitator Yonela Swayi and assisted by Sifunda Kunye facilitators (Volunteers) from grade 11. The facilitators program for grade 11 is a great way and opportunity for our future leaders to give back and pay it forward.

2019 was over all a very successful year with an average of 100 little readers  attending our Saturday Reading clubs.

On the 9th of November 2019 after our end year Santa Clause visit our well deserving facilitators enjoyed a BBQ at Bushmans Sand hotel.

Our school is grateful to Sifunda Kunye Educational project for running and sponsoring this club.

Sifunda Kunye Writing Camp 2019

From the 23rd to the 25th of August, we attended a writing camp in Keiskammahoes. At the camp we were assorted with kids from the other school such as Richard Varha, St Matthews, Toise and Xolani and that gave us a chance to make new friends. Each year the camp has a new theme and this year it was UBUNTU and we had to write poems or short stories based on UBUNTU. Because we are all inexperience writers hoping to be good writers one day, the camp mainly focused on teaching us how to write Poems and Short stories and what to focus on when writing a poem. It was a really enjoyable experience to such an extent that I will be making sure that the writing club runs smoothly and I will volunteer myself in facilitating the writing club and make sure that everyone writes and produce good poems and short stories.

Looking forward to attending the next camp as a facilitator.

The Presidents Awards

This term the president’s award team (learners in bronze and silver level) have teamed up to hike every weekend afternoons. Each day from Friday till Sunday they walk 14 km practicing for their next levels. The walk has been really fun and tiring but each weekend is better than the other as they have been walking from school to the Shamwari Gate or walk up the Bury Butchel’s Safari lodge route. They are all looking forward to the next president’s award camps hoping that they are ready for the kilometers that they going to be walking in the camp.

Sifunda Kunye Community Reading club and Facilitators program term 2

For the club, we have had a wonderful term. The kids have been coming in numbers and our facilitators have been enjoying each and every session with the kids. The club started a year ago and throughout the whole journey the facilitators have managed to acquire skills on how to work with the kids and be able to control the over excitement the kids always have.

The whole experience of working with the kids have caused our old facilitators to want to continue working with the kids even though their time span has been finished. The facilitators are supposed to work for a year then we can recruit new facilitators the following year. In total we have 10 facilitators (5 olds and 5 new) and 90 kids who attend our reading club.

The kids enjoy a fun day dancing along to action songs and doing group reading or enjoying a lovely story read by one of the facilitators. Sometimes they also tell their own stories or do drawings. The drawings interpret what each individual has learned that specific day or what they have enjoyed most about that day.

The club has also engaged in a clean-up program where they had to find the dirtiest place in the community and try to fill up 200 bean bags with trash. The program was organized by the Shamwari group and in return the kids received a donation of books for the club.

Sifunda Kunye Lab Facilitator note June 2019

THE FACILITATOR’S NOTE

Hey guys!

We customarily have the principal do the note, but this term we have are doing things differently.

We have surprisingly had a very short and busy term and that for the school means less extra mural activities, but because we have clubs running at the school the busy schedule doesn’t hold them back. The clubs includes Community Reading Club, Eco-club, The Girls Club and newly formed Gumboot Dance Club. We all know that education is the key but what is education without a little fun.

Most of the clubs we have at the school are supported by the Shamwari group and Sifundakunye who will soon hold a camp for The Presidents Awards: Bronze level. We started joining the TPA in 2017 and we already have kids that are in Silver Level and will also be attending Gold camp towards the end of the year. Each year we enrol new learners and they start in bronze and will finish in Gold Level if they complete their Community service hours and attend compulsory camps.

It is said that, teaching is the profession that makes all other professions possible. Teachers are the ones who bring about change in students life with fun and excitement and develop thrill of learning in them. With that being said we would like to welcome Mr Diya, Miss Siwisa and Miss James to our staff, not leaving out Miss Matera who recently joined the school for her practicals. We hope that they will keep their heads up high and bring golden feathers in the cap of our school.

Good luck comes to you as your hand is full of moment and courage along with good qualities. Best wishes to the learners on their mid-year exams.

A big thank you to all the teachers for trusting and believing in the use of CAMI.

All the best and enjoy this edition.

Sifunda Kunye Sports Tournament 16 February 2019.

The school took part in this term’s Sifunda kunye sport event that took place in King Williams Town on the 16th of February.  It was the first time our school took part in this event as it occurs annually but our teams managed to make us proud. The teams that took part were our 1st teams for both Netball and soccer. Our soccer team won the soccer tournament and our netball team came in 4th place.

It was a very nice event to be part of and we would like to thank sifunda kunye and our partner school for such and amazing time the learners had enjoyed in the event.

Sifunda Kunye Reading club

The school launched their community reading club in 2018 and since then the club has been holding sessions two Saturdays a month. In these sessions the kids sing and enjoy a good story that is read by one of the facilitators. We either have group readings or a facilitator seats in front of the kids or read a story on the subject of the theme of that particular month. Since it was the month of love in February our theme was LOVE and we read a story about a princess that was trapped in a tall tower by a witch. Rapunzel was helped by a prince that ended up marrying her. The kids really enjoyed the story and got snack afterwards. Our sessions starts at 9 to 12 every second Saturday of the month. We even allow children who attend crèche to attend our reading club.

We would like to thank Jolande Swartz for making sure that the children are getting snacks at the end of each reading club session.
